A larger composition around the original area
The original tribal design occupies a smaller part of the upper arm. The lion-and-skull composition extends beyond it, showing why a cover-up brief should include the surrounding skin.
Shading changes the focal point
The left view shows lettering through the lotus outline. In the right view, shaded petals become the focus. The example makes the new design's darker areas easy to compare.

A name, symbol or old design can stop reflecting what you want to wear. You do not need to explain its personal history to begin a consultation. Start with what you would like to change and what you want the new tattoo to feel like.
A cover-up introduces a new design over existing work. Reworking focuses on changing or strengthening parts of the existing design. Which direction is practical depends on the ink already there and the result you want; neither is a promise that any image can conceal any tattoo.

Inking appointments
Agree the design and project scope before the appointment. The required work determines how the project is planned; there is no universal one-session promise.

Is a Cover-Up Tattoo Right for You?
It is worth discussing if you want to replace a name or symbol, change a faded or poorly executed design, or move towards a different style. The new design may need more space or a different contrast balance than your first reference.
Send an overall placement view as well as a close-up. A tightly cropped image of the ink can hide the room available around it. Our cover-up consultation photo checklist explains what to photograph before contacting the studio.

Questions before a cover-up consultation
Can every tattoo be covered with my preferred design?
No particular replacement can be promised from the idea alone. The existing ink and the proposed design must be assessed together. Bring more than one direction you would be comfortable wearing.
Do I need to know exactly what I want first?
A finished design is not necessary. Explain what you want changed, the subjects or styles you like and any boundaries on size or placement.
Can you quote from a close-up alone?
A close-up is useful, but an overall placement photo shows the surrounding space. Include an approximate size and your preferred new design so the consultation starts with more than the old ink alone.
